Odoo accounting in the UK that your finance team can trust at VAT quarter end

We set up the ledger, VAT codes and bank reconciliation so your quarterly VAT figures come straight from the transactions. Your accountant reviews the configuration before the first return.

In short

Odoo accounting: United Kingdom

Odoo accounting in the UK means configuring Odoo's Accounting app so a British company can keep its books, reconcile its banks and produce VAT returns that meet Making Tax Digital. The UK localisation provides the starting chart of accounts and standard, reduced, zero-rated and exempt VAT taxes. On top of that we map your existing nominal codes, set fiscal positions for EU and overseas trade, and configure the VAT report your accountant checks each quarter. Depending on your Odoo edition and version, the return can then be submitted to HMRC directly from Odoo.

Local context

The UK tax rules behind the setup

HMRC's digital requirements decide a good part of how Odoo's ledger should be configured. Rules change, so confirm the current position with your accountant.

01

MTD for VAT

Since April 2022 all VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file VAT returns using HMRC-recognised software. Retyping figures from one system into another breaks the digital link MTD expects.

02

MTD for Income Tax

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income above £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates, and lower thresholds are planned for later years. This affects owner-managed firms more than limited companies.

03

HMRC submission from Odoo

Odoo's UK localisation includes an HMRC connection for VAT returns, available as an Enterprise feature depending on your edition and version. Where it is not available, Odoo can still produce the figures for HMRC-recognised bridging software.

04

Trading with the EU after Brexit

Sales and purchases with EU customers and suppliers need their own tax treatment. Fiscal positions apply the right VAT rule automatically based on where the partner is and what kind of business they are.

05

Nominal codes your accountant knows

Many UK bookkeepers think in Sage-style nominal codes. We keep familiar numbering where it helps, so management accounts still read the way your board expects.

Working together

Remote setup that suits a UK finance calendar

Finance work needs careful timing and sign-off, which written, remote delivery handles well.

Planned around VAT quarters

We schedule the switch for the start of a VAT period, so one quarter is not split between two systems.

Reviews with your accountant

Configuration decisions are set out in a written note your external accountant can read and approve, and calls with them can be booked in their working day.

Careful handling of financial data

Bank statements and ledgers are shared through agreed channels, access is limited to the consultants on your project, and you can revoke it at handover.

FAQ

Questions we hear most

Is Odoo compliant with Making Tax Digital?

Odoo's UK localisation supports MTD VAT returns, with direct submission to HMRC available in the Enterprise edition depending on your version. Compliance also depends on how records are kept, so your accountant should review the setup and the first return.

Can Odoo handle the flat rate or cash accounting VAT schemes?

Odoo can be configured for different VAT approaches, but some schemes need extra setup or manual adjustment. Tell us which scheme you use and we will show you how Odoo would handle it before you commit, and check the result with your accountant.

Will our accountant still be able to work with us?

Yes. Your accountant can have their own Odoo user with adviser rights, see the same reports and export what they need for year-end. Many prefer it to receiving spreadsheets.

Does Odoo connect to UK banks?

Bank synchronisation is available for many banks through Odoo's providers, depending on your bank and Odoo edition. If there is no feed, statement files in common formats can be imported and matched with reconciliation rules.

What about MTD for Income Tax?

MTD for Income Tax applies to individuals, starting from April 2026 for sole traders and landlords above an income threshold. If that is you, talk to your accountant about which software they will use, and we can make sure the figures in Odoo are easy to hand over.
