Restaurant management system development from order to plate cost

We connect the front of house, the kitchen and the store room, so every order updates the kitchen queue, the ingredient stock and the day's food cost.

Definition

What is Restaurant Management Systems?

Restaurant management system development is the building or configuration of software that runs a restaurant's operations beyond the cash counter: table and order management, kitchen display screens, menus and modifiers, recipes, ingredient stock and branch reporting. It links each menu item sold to the ingredients it consumes, so food cost and stock levels are calculated from real sales. It can be custom-built or based on Odoo Point of Sale with restaurant features and extensions.

A restaurant can have a working billing counter and still not know its food cost. Orders are shouted or printed on slips that get lost, takeaway and delivery-app orders are re-keyed by hand, and the store room issues ingredients without linking them to what was sold. Restaurant management software becomes useful when the kitchen, the counter and the store room all read from the same order.

Business challenges

What goes wrong between the counter and the kitchen

01

Orders lost between counter and kitchen

Paper slips go missing, modifications are misread, and nobody knows how long an order has been waiting.

02

Unknown food cost

Menu prices are set without an up-to-date recipe cost, so margins shrink as ingredient prices change.

03

Ingredient stock without control

Wastage, staff meals and over-portioning are invisible because consumption is not compared with sales.

04

Too many order channels

Dine-in, takeaway, phone orders and delivery platforms each run in a different place.

Process

From menu engineering to a busy Friday night

We test the system during real service hours before calling it ready.

  1. Observe service

Review a lunch and dinner service, on site or by video, to see how orders move from guest to kitchen to bill.

  2. Configure or build

Compare your needs with Odoo POS restaurant features and decide what to configure and what to build.

  3. Set up menu and recipes

Structure the menu, modifiers and recipe cards with your chef and store manager.

  4. Install and connect

Set up terminals, kitchen screens and printers with your team, and connect the ordering channels you use.

  5. Pilot during service

Run the system at one branch during real service and adjust layouts and routing.

  6. Roll out branches

Copy the tested setup to other branches with local menu and price differences.

FAQ

Restaurant Management Systems: questions we hear most

What is the difference between a restaurant management system and a POS?

A POS handles taking orders and payments at the counter, while a restaurant management system also covers the kitchen, tables, recipes, ingredient stock and branch reporting. Many restaurants start with a POS and add the rest later.

Can the system calculate food cost per dish?

Yes. Each menu item gets a recipe with ingredient quantities, and the system uses current purchase prices to calculate cost and margin per dish. Actual cost is then compared with theoretical cost using stock counts.

Can orders from delivery apps come in automatically?

It depends on whether the delivery platform offers an integration or API to your restaurant. Where it does, orders can flow straight to the kitchen; where it does not, staff enter them on a quick-entry screen.

Does it work without internet?

Most restaurant terminals can be designed or configured to continue taking orders offline and sync when the connection returns. We confirm the offline behavior of the chosen setup before go-live.

Can we use our existing printers and screens?

Often yes. Many standard receipt printers and kitchen screens can be reused, and we check compatibility of your hardware during discovery.
