WordPress plugin development services for functionality you can't download

When no plugin in the directory does what your business needs, or three plugins half-do it, we write one that does exactly that, and nothing more.

Definition

What is WordPress Plugin Development?

WordPress plugin development services are the design, coding and maintenance of custom plugins that add functionality to a WordPress site without modifying WordPress core or the theme. A plugin hooks into WordPress through actions and filters, and can register custom post types, blocks, admin screens, REST API endpoints and scheduled tasks. Keeping functionality in a plugin rather than the theme means it survives a redesign and can be reused across sites.

Off-the-shelf plugins are built for thousands of sites, so they rarely match one company's exact rules, and stacking several to approximate a workflow creates conflicts and security exposure. Functionality written into a theme's functions.php file disappears when the theme changes. A purpose-built plugin puts business logic in one place, with tests and a version number.

Business challenges

When existing plugins aren't enough

01

Nothing fits the workflow

Existing plugins cover most of the requirement, and the missing part is the bit your team actually needs.

02

Logic trapped in the theme

Business rules written into functions.php are lost or broken the moment the site is redesigned.

03

Abandoned or insecure plugins

A critical feature depends on a plugin that hasn't been updated in years or has published vulnerabilities.

04

Integrations that fail silently

Data sync to a CRM or ERP stops working and nobody notices because there's no logging or alerting.

What Digihub provides

Our WordPress Plugin Development service

01

Requirements & technical specification

We define inputs, outputs, user roles, settings and edge cases, and check whether a well-maintained existing plugin could be extended instead.

02

Plugin architecture

Namespaced, object-oriented PHP with Composer autoloading, clear separation of admin, public and API code, and uninstall routines that clean up after themselves.

03

Custom blocks & admin screens

Gutenberg blocks built with the WordPress block APIs and React, plus settings pages and list tables that follow the WordPress admin's conventions.

04

REST API endpoints & integrations

Custom endpoints with permission callbacks, and outbound connections to CRMs, ERPs, payment or logistics APIs with retries and logging.

05

WooCommerce extensions

Custom product types, pricing rules, checkout fields, shipping methods and order workflows built on WooCommerce's hooks and data stores.

06

Testing, documentation & maintenance

Automated tests where they add value, readme and changelog, compatibility checks with new WordPress versions, and ongoing fixes.

Business benefits

What WordPress Plugin Development changes for your business

01

Exactly the feature you need

No bundled extras, upsell banners or settings you'll never touch.

02

Survives redesigns

Functionality lives in a plugin, so changing the theme doesn't break your business logic.

03

You own the code

No license renewals for core functionality, and the source is handed over to your repository on full payment.

04

Fewer plugins overall

One focused plugin often replaces several partial ones, reducing conflicts and update load.

Use cases

Where it makes the biggest difference

Booking and scheduling rules

Availability, capacity and pricing logic specific to your services, managed from the WordPress admin.

ERP and CRM synchronization

Leads, orders, stock or customer records exchanged between WordPress and your back-office system on a schedule or in real time.

Member and partner portals

Restricted content, document downloads and custom user roles for dealers, students or clients.

WooCommerce business rules

Wholesale pricing, minimum order quantities, custom checkout validation or region-specific shipping logic.

Process

From specification to versioned release

The plugin's scope is written down first, so it does one job well instead of growing without limit.

  1. Specify

Requirements, user stories and edge cases written down, including what the plugin will not do.

  2. Evaluate options

We check whether extending a maintained plugin beats writing a new one.

  3. Design

Data model, hooks, admin UI and API contracts agreed before coding.

  4. Develop

Code built in a Git repository against a local and staging WordPress install.

  5. Review & test

Coding standards checks, security review, automated and manual tests.

  6. Release

Versioned deployment to production with rollback ready.

  7. Maintain

Compatibility updates for new WordPress, PHP and WooCommerce releases.

Security & scalability

Security, quality and scale

Capability & nonce checks

Every admin action and form submission verifies the user's permissions and a valid nonce.

Sanitize in, escape out

All input is validated and sanitized, all output escaped, and database queries use prepared statements.

Secrets stored safely

API credentials kept out of the codebase and out of front-end output.

Built for load

Heavy tasks moved to background queues and expensive queries cached, so the plugin doesn't slow page loads.

FAQ

WordPress Plugin Development: questions we hear most

How much does a custom WordPress plugin cost?

The cost depends on the number of features, admin screens, integrations and the level of testing required. A plugin that adds one custom field and a filter is very different from one that syncs orders with an ERP. We quote after a written specification.

Can you modify an existing plugin instead of building a new one?

Often, yes. If the plugin offers hooks, we extend it from a separate add-on so its own updates still work. Editing a third-party plugin's files directly is avoided because updates would overwrite the changes.

Will the plugin work with future WordPress versions?

We build against WordPress's public APIs and avoid deprecated functions, which keeps future compatibility realistic. Like any software, plugins need occasional updates as WordPress, PHP and dependent plugins change, which we can handle under a maintenance arrangement.

Do you build WooCommerce extensions?

Yes. WooCommerce plugin development is a common request, covering custom pricing, checkout fields, shipping methods, product types and integrations with inventory or accounting systems.

Can you publish the plugin on WordPress.org?

We can prepare a plugin to meet the WordPress.org plugin guidelines and help with submission, though approval is decided by the plugin review team. Most business plugins stay private and are installed only on your sites.

Who owns the plugin code?

You do, once the project is paid in full. The source code is then delivered to your repository, with documentation, and you can use it on any of your sites.
